Shoto Training Sword - Traditional Japanese Wooden Short Sword
The Shoto, also known as the Kodachi or Wakizashi (if made of steel), is a traditional wooden short sword measuring approximately 60 cm. This training tool is widely used in Japanese martial arts practice, especially within the classical schools of Kenjutsu (Koryu). A cornerstone for learning two-sword techniques, the Shoto is an essential part of the Niten Ichi Ryu method, founded by the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Often paired with a Bokken, the Shoto enables mastery of dual-wielding techniques, enhancing combat sequencing skills.
In samurai culture, the Wakizashi (or the wooden Shoto for training) symbolized honor and personal defense. Samurai traditionally kept this short sword by their side, even indoors, while the katana remained outside. Its compact size makes the Shoto ideal for confined spaces, allowing practitioners to perfect close-range defensive techniques and counter-attacks, thereby deepening their understanding of swordsmanship.
